Bibles To Athens
Written by our Chaplain, Philip Mounstephen, regarding the reception of a Bible shipment to St. Paul's Athens

In the early evening of Easter Day, Fr Malcolm, Chaplain of St Paul’s, Athens, was the guest preacher at the Pentecostal Tabernacle of ‘Faith Apostolic Ministries’ Athens, a worship centre located in a neighbourhood of central Athens where the greatest concentration of migrants and refuges reside. The Tabernacle is a converted basement area. The reason for this preachment was to celebrate a gift of fifty Bibles in French which was made available through the generosity of St. Michael’s Church, Paris. Pastor Jimoh Adebayo, the minister who founded this Pentecostal Tabernacle, And a Nigerian by birth, works in partnership with Fr Malcolm and the Orthodox Archdiocese of Athens in distributing 800 meals to the homeless and migrants of central Athens by means of the ‘Church in the Street’ programme. This programme has entered into its fourth year. Of late, at the Tabernacle, Pastor Jimoh has found himself hosting French speaking migrants from Algeria, the Cameroons and the Congo. From these migrants came the request for Bibles in French. Given the cost of obtaining such Bibles in Athens, Pastor Jimoh approached Fr Malcolm who subsequently turned to the Revd Philip Mounstephen of St Michael’s, Paris, enquiring if his congregation could help. Within three weeks the Bibles arrived in Athens. They were most gratefully received by the French speaking members of the Tabernacle of Faith Apostolic Ministries .This gratitude was deeply and genuinely expressed in a Pentecostal celebration on Easter Day.

A Family Farewell
Written by our Chaplain, Philip Mounstephen, following the passing of lond-standing Saint Michaels member Christine Luu-Mihn

A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows,
is God in his holy dwelling.
God sets the lonely in families (Psalm 68:5,6)

One of the real delights of belonging to God’s church is knowing that by doing so we are part of a family, with God as our Father. And yet that makes losing a member of that family – a brother, or a sister – all the more painful, because we suffer quite literally from a family bereavement.

Christine Luu-Minh had been a member of St. Michael’s since 1976, and became, as she said, ‘a part of the furniture.’ She died a couple of days before Christmas 2011. And so it was that we gathered to remember her together at her Memorial Service on Saturday 11th February 2012. It was a very special time.

We gathered to remember her with real affection. Christine was an enthusiastic painter – as the painting above testifies – a passionate player of the piano, and a dedicated follower of the ballet and the opera. She was also eccentric and quirky, and sometimes demanding, but we loved her. Former Chaplain, Brian Lea, spoke about her with real affection and humour; Hede Bohnisch and Ann Duminil shared moving memories of their friendships and we shared a wonderful meal prepared by a team headed up by Jana Roussel. It was a real family celebration.

But the St. Michael’s family wasn’t the only family there. Christine’s natural family were there too, and in some numbers. That is itself was touching because Christine had had a very difficult relationship with her family, and had been estranged from some of them for many years. But what happened after the service was even more special. ‘There is such love here,’ said one of Christine’s relations, ‘it feels like paradise.’ And if paradise is a place of reconciliation then she was right as there was a strong feeling of just that both between her church and her natural family, and between members of that family as people long separated met up. As Chaplain I felt so proud seeing members of St. Michael’s quite evidently ‘crossing to the other side of the road’ to make contact with Christine’s relatives.

But behind all this was something even more phenomenal. Just as she had struggled with her family so Christine had also struggled with faith. Trust had not come easily to her, perhaps for obvious reasons. But that was not the case at the end. In the days before her death Christine demonstrated a remarkable sense of calm, where before she had often been agitated. Perhaps she sensed that the end was close, but even more it was due to the fact that she finally knew that she truly belonged to God’s family and that she really was his child. Just a very few days before she died on December 18th 2011 she gave Hede a folded up piece of paper, the text of which you’ll find below. She wrote (typically quirkily) in German, and they are remarkable words: words that constitute not only her testimony but also her testament (‘will’ in French) to us, her family. They are testimony above all to God’s grace and love, and to him alone be the glory. So let the last word be Christine’s – in the original German and then translated into French and English. Thank you, Christine, åfor this great gift to us. Until we meet again in glory…

Now I know that never in my life will I be lonely again.
Oh what happiness that with the help of my Christian friends I have met JESUS.
What a gift is the love and faithfulness of CHRIST.
Now I am a child of God and I shall never forget that.
Childhood is gone and I have entered adulthood now.
The pain has melted.

10% Challenge 2011
Written by our Chaplain Philip Mounstephen assessing last year's 10% Challenge

For St. Michael’s, 2011 was the year of ‘The 10% Challenge’. The 10% Challenge was an idea that just seemed to grow and grow from a germ of a thought into an overarching growth strategy. It really did feel like it was an idea placed in our corporate ‘brain’ by the Lord himself. We ran a whole range of activities through the year all under the overarching challenge:

•	to trust
•	to serve
•	to give
•	to grow

Within that we also had some more specific goals, namely to see at least:

•	a 10% increase in average Sunday attendance
•	a 10% increase in regular monthly giving
•	a 10% increase in those giving by standing order
•	a 10% increase in those giving by the envelope scheme
•	an increase in non-financial giving and growth, expressed by current members in their renewed commitment to the life and activities of our church

But how did we do? Did it actually make any difference? The Challenge formally run up to the end of January 2012, and it was with some trepidation that in mid-February I set out to work out we had actually done.

First of all I compared the congregation attendance figures for January 2011 with those for 2012. I found (to be honest to my surprise) that while in January 2011 there was a total of 1,012 people in Church, during 2012 there were no fewer than 1,142 people attending – an increase not of 10% but of 13%!

What then about our hoped for 10% increase in regular monthly giving? Well the news there was rather different. The planned giving total for 2010 was 352,810€, while that for 2011 was 324,550€ - which is actually an 8% drop. But then I looked at out total income figures for the year and found that our total income had not fallen but had actually risen – again not by 10% but by a full 13%!

The results as far as giving by envelopes and giving by direct debit / virement was concerned were even more impressive, both rose by no less that 26%!

Any increase in service and commitment is of course much harder to measure, but it certainly felt like there had been real progress in this area through the many opportunities the 10% Challenge gave us. In 2011 we noted in particular:

•	Increased regular attendance and faith rising at the monthly prayer meeting.
•	Growth of small groups – 4 new ones formed in 2011
•	Alpha – new people challenged to give talks and lead small groups in English and French
•	Development of a ‘volunteer culture’: many key areas of church life such as children’s ministry and pastoral care are now coordinated by volunteers
•	New leaders being trained for leading and preaching in services
•	New people have been challenged to pray, join worship/sides people/welcome/prayer ministry and welcome teams
•	Training opportunities through the ‘Schools’ of Prayer, Evangelism and Theology, to equip people to live as disciples throughout the week, not just on a Sunday.

So what conclusions can we draw from all this? Here are a few suggestions...

One thing we can conclude is that whilst our regular monthly income is lower, more people are giving through planned giving schemes: we simply have more regular givers than we did before and that must be an indication of increased commitment for which we are very grateful.

Looking at the overall income figure as well perhaps makes the point to us (once again!) that it doesn’t matter how the Lord meets our needs: we must simply trust him to do so.

Above all though, the credit must go to our God. He has shown that he is good. He has shown that in difficult times economically he remains faithful. He has shown that he really does hear and answer the prayers of his people. So may we all grow in faith, and for all the positive fruit of the 10% Challenge – may the glory above all go to our God!

Revenge At Bethlehem, And Our Carol Service
Written by Archie Bagnall (our Ministry Assistant) about Christmas activities on Sun 11th Dec 2011

The annual organised fun and chaos of the Saint Michael’s youth and children’s Christmas production was enthusiastically performed to us the morning of Sunday 11th December. For the last month, the girls and boys were led under the direction of leader Jenni Schappert, in a production unlike any other nativity in Paris. ‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’ followed the foibles of the four Herdman family children (the most horrible kids in school), who upon hearing they could get a sweet supply of biscuits at Sunday School – decided it was about time to cash in on the deal and why not sabotage the Christmas Nativity whilst they were at it. However as their sabotage continued, and the Nativity became a high octane drama titled ‘Revenge At Bethlehem’, they began to understand the true meaning of the baby in their play.

It was evident that the children were having huge amounts of fun performing their play, and it was lovely to see all ages involved- including guest appearances from crèche as the firemen who enthusiastically doused the invisible flames of the production when it caught fire (all planned). Many thanks to everyone who was involved, and congratulations to all our Youth and Children, huge efforts were put in by all.

Later that same evening many were round at the Eglise Réformée du Saint Esprit for our Carol Service. Music was led by the Saint Michael’s Choir with conductor Christopher Herbert, and included killer solos from Anna Wall, and Manna Ito. Not disheartened by the rain outside, all were loud in voice – and with roughly 450 in attendance, light work was made of the 600 mince pies and 50 litres of mulled wine served back at Saint Michael’s after the service.

The Carol Service is one of the bigger events in the Saint Michael’s Choir’s calendar. For a group who rehearse once a week on Wednesday evenings, and had roughly a month the put most of the material together, the service was real testament to their abilities. It was obvious how much work had been put in by every member. Thank you.

Services&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/48271/588368/Services.jpg" width="555" height="120" width_o="555" height_o="120" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/48271/588368/Services_o.jpg" data-mid="2810348"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
(NB This Sunday 1st January 2012 there is one English language service at 10h30 and one French language service at 17h.)

There are five services each Sunday at St. Michael’s – but we are one congregation and value our unity very highly. French speaking people often come to English language services – and vice versa. The style of the services may change but we study the same passage of scripture, often with the same preacher – and with the same goal, to grow in the knowledge and love of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

09h30* [English]
A traditional liturgical service, both reflective and prayerful. With music led by our organ or the St. Michael’s Choir, services follow a pattern of either Morning Prayer or Holy Communion.

11h15*^ [English] [Youth and Children]
A lively Family service of worship and teaching, with music led by a worship band with songs and hymns both old and new. There are groups for young people and children, and an all-age service once a month, though you don’t have to be a member of a family to come, all are welcome!

14h00 [Tamil]
A Tamil-led service, in Tamil, serving a congregation drawn from Paris’ large Tamil community. Guests are always welcome. Every month one of St. Michael’s clergy will preach and lead a service of Holy Communion.

17h00 [French]
A French language service with a focus on ministry and mission with those whose first language is French. An intimate atmosphere and provision for all ages. Holy Communion is celebrated every other week, and a service of prayers for healing is held once a month.

19h00* [English] [18-30]
Contemporary, informal service of worship with a friendly atmosphere. Popular with students and young professionals.

*These services follow the same sermon series, and therefore feature the same sermon preached at all three services.

^Our English language Young People and Children's groups take place during the 11h15 service only.

Revd. Philip Mounstephen: Chaplain
philipmounstephen@saintmichaelsparis.org

Philip is married to Ruth and they have a daughter, Kitty who is currently studying in the UK. Before coming to St. Michael's, Philip worked for CPAS, one of the Anglican mission agencies that St. Michael's supports, equipping UK churches in mission and ministry. Prior to that he led a multi-ethnic church in Streatham in South London, following a curacy in a suburban parish in south Buckinghamshire.

His many and varied passions and interests include visiting old battlefields, entertaining friends, doing family history research, collecting trivial information (which he insists is important), supporting Newcastle United and collecting old vinyl records. Above all though, he is passionate about the church growing in ever fuller understanding of what it means to be the body of Christ: a place where Jesus lives by his Spirit, and through which he continues to show his love to the world.

		<description>HomegroupsChildren &#38; Youth GroupsFocus

At Saint Michael’s, we believe that we are called to belong together as part of the family of God, so community really matters to us. We rejoice in doing things together, but we also have opportunities for people to meet in small groups, some for younger people and some for older! You’ll find details of these groups by clicking on the links below.

Home Groups
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/48271/588373/HomeGtroups.jpg" width="555" height="120" width_o="555" height_o="120" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/48271/588373/HomeGtroups_o.jpg" data-mid="13141518" border="0" align="left"/&#62; - Being church when we are not at church.	Our Home groups meet regularly at different venues across Paris. In these groups we seek to grow in our faith through prayer, Bible study, and worship, and also to build our relationships with others in the church.

If you'd like to join a home group, please contact the church office. We'd be delighted to set it up for you.

A huge WELCOME and a big HELLO to all you children, teens and students new to Paris and the church. At Saint Michael's we run a full range of activities for children and young people from ages 0-16. From Crèche to Sunday Club and on to Flow there’s something on for everyone on a Sunday morning during the 11h15 service.

Crèche (0-2)
We meet just above the main service area. The crèche is run by volunteers who work on a monthly rota but parents are welcome to join them too if they wish.

Sunday Club (3-10)
There are three groups: ’Bubbles’ (3-5), ‘Splash’ (6-8) and ‘XStream’ (9-10). God’s story with humans comes to life in many different ways through activities, games, songs, readings, prayers… And we see how His plans for us and the world become reality.

Flow (11-16)
Starting to take a deeper look at the Bible, discovering what God has to say to us today. Discussion, prayer and friendship.

<description>Meet the Chaplain Our Vision Our Values

Meet the Chaplain&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/48271/588355/Philip.JPG" width="555" height="120" width_o="555" height_o="120" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/48271/588355/Philip_o.JPG" data-mid="2812050"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Welcome to the St. Michael’s website!

You may have come here for a number of reasons – maybe you’re moving to Paris for a short period of time and looking for a church; maybe you’re already here and would just like to hear some English being spoken! Maybe you’re planning a trip, or will be moving here for the long term. Whatever position you’re in, there will be plenty at St. Michael’s in the same boat, so we hope that you’ll find your way to us – either on Sunday, or midweek - and make your home with us. We’d love to get to know you, and indeed we exist to bring a loving welcome, in the name of Jesus Christ, to all those who come, for however long or short a time, to this great and beautiful city.

My name is Philip Mounstephen and it’s my great privilege and pleasure to be Chaplain of St. Michael’s. St Michael’s is a very diverse church, drawing in people of all ages from many nations, worshipping in three languages, in a variety of styles and at a range of different times. Like any group of human beings we’re diverse in other ways too! Some of us are strong in faith, others of us are perhaps feeling our way towards Christian belief. You can find more about what we stand for by looking at our vision and values [see below]. But wherever you come from, and whoever you are, you’re welcome with us – and our prayer is that as you meet us, and become – however temporarily – a part of our community, so you’ll meet Jesus Christ too.

With every good wish,

Philip Mounstephen

Our vision statement excites us! We believe it to be our calling from God and everything we do is designed to help us towards this end.

In Christ Jesus and through the Holy Spirit, God calls us to:

•	Intimacy with him
•	Deep commitment to one another
•	Lives which show the fruit of radical obedience, and to
•	Be a beacon in Paris and to the nations.

Our Values&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/48271/588355/values.jpg" width="555" height="120" width_o="555" height_o="120" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/1/48271/588355/values_o.jpg" data-mid="2812076"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
We’re excited by our vision statement - but we need to put it into practice! That’s where values come in. Values have been described as ‘the beliefs which govern how we behave’.

Here are St. Michael’s values, the things we’re fundamentally committed to, which we won’t compromise, and that govern how we go about God’s work here.

International: Committed as one Christian family to celebrating our national, racial, cultural and linguistic variety, and expressing ourselves in a manner as widely accessible as possible.

Ecumenical: Committed to working across denominational boundaries, both within and outside the family of St. Michael’s.

Anglican: Committed to the authority of the Bishop, and Anglican norms in worship and governance.

Communal: Committed to growing deeply together as disciples, and caring for each other in community, across the age spectrum, within the love of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Worshipping: Committed to reverence, relevance and variety in our worship of God the Holy Trinity in ways that resonate with both heart and mind.

Missional: Committed to making the good news of Jesus Christ known in word and deed in Paris, and to supporting the work of mission across the world.

Generous: Committed to seeing our gifts, including our money, as having been entrusted to us by God for use to his glory.

Excellent: Committed to giving God nothing less than our very best in every area of our life together.

Biblical: Committed to discovering ever more of God through his Word, and having the Holy Scriptures as our final moral and doctrinal authority.
