Meet the Chaplain

Welcome to the St. Michael’s website!

You may have come here for a number of reasons – maybe you’re moving to Paris for a short period of time and looking for a church; maybe you’re already here and would just like to hear some English being spoken! Maybe you’re planning a trip, or will be moving here for the long term. Whatever position you’re in, there will be plenty at St. Michael’s in the same boat, so we hope that you’ll find your way to us – either on Sunday, or midweek - and make your home with us. We’d love to get to know you, and indeed we exist to bring a loving welcome, in the name of Jesus Christ, to all those who come, for however long or short a time, to this great and beautiful city.

My name is Philip Mounstephen and it’s my great privilege and pleasure to be Chaplain of St. Michael’s. St Michael’s is a very diverse church, drawing in people of all ages from many nations, worshipping in three languages, in a variety of styles and at a range of different times. Like any group of human beings we’re diverse in other ways too! Some of us are strong in faith, others of us are perhaps feeling our way towards Christian belief. You can find more about what we stand for by looking at our vision and values [see below]. But wherever you come from, and whoever you are, you’re welcome with us – and our prayer is that as you meet us, and become – however temporarily – a part of our community, so you’ll meet Jesus Christ too.

With every good wish,

Philip Mounstephen

Our Vision

Our vision statement excites us! We believe it to be our calling from God and everything we do is designed to help us towards this end.

In Christ Jesus and through the Holy Spirit, God calls us to:

• Intimacy with him
• Deep commitment to one another
• Lives which show the fruit of radical obedience, and to
• Be a beacon in Paris and to the nations.

Our Values

We’re excited by our vision statement - but we need to put it into practice! That’s where values come in. Values have been described as ‘the beliefs which govern how we behave’.

Here are St. Michael’s values, the things we’re fundamentally committed to, which we won’t compromise, and that govern how we go about God’s work here.

International: Committed as one Christian family to celebrating our national, racial, cultural and linguistic variety, and expressing ourselves in a manner as widely accessible as possible.

Ecumenical: Committed to working across denominational boundaries, both within and outside the family of St. Michael’s.

Anglican: Committed to the authority of the Bishop, and Anglican norms in worship and governance.

Communal: Committed to growing deeply together as disciples, and caring for each other in community, across the age spectrum, within the love of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Worshipping: Committed to reverence, relevance and variety in our worship of God the Holy Trinity in ways that resonate with both heart and mind.

Missional: Committed to making the good news of Jesus Christ known in word and deed in Paris, and to supporting the work of mission across the world.

Generous:
Committed to seeing our gifts, including our money, as having been entrusted to us by God for use to his glory.

Excellent: Committed to giving God nothing less than our very best in every area of our life together.

Biblical:
Committed to discovering ever more of God through his Word, and having the Holy Scriptures as our final moral and doctrinal authority.
